Jean-Marie De Koninck was a Professor in the Département de mathématique et de statistiques at Université Laval for over 40 years. He is now Professor Emeritus. Known to the general public as founding president of Opération Nez rouge, he was also very active in the media during his ten years as president of the Table québécoise de la sécurité routière. He now sits on the Board of Directors of the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec. Jean-Marie De Koninck has spearheaded a number of projects, including Sciences et mathématiques en action (SMAC), which aims to strengthen young people's interest in math and science, and demystify mathematics for the general public. Professor De Koninck is the author of 17 books and 177 articles published in scientific journals. He is also recognized as an excellent popularizer, as demonstrated by his books in the "Secret LIfe of Mathematics" series, his book on road safety "Routes et déroutes" and his latest collection "Cette science qui ne cesse de nous étonner". The many public lectures he gives each year, as well as his sports and science columns on Radio-Canada radio, help to make science ever more accessible and captivating. Many also know him as a passionate commentator on swimming events presented across the country on Radio-Canada television.
